John Santana has a new
partner, Gabriel Cruz, in the soon-to-be released mystery, No Way To Die. Cruz is a fictional Army vet who fought in the fourteen-hour Battle of Kamdesh in the Nuristan Province in eastern Afghanistan, on the Pakistan border. On October 3, 2009, in a valley surrounded by mountains on three sides, more than 300 Taliban attacked the base. Fifty soldiers of the Black Knight Troop (3-61 Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division) stationed there
were outnumbered and overwhelmed. Despite the overwhelming odds, they defeated their attackers, but at great cost––eight died and twenty-two were injured.
Clinton Romesha and Ty Carter were awarded the Medal of Honor. Additionally,
twenty-seven Purple Hearts, nine Silver Stars, thirty-seven Army Commendation Medals with “V” and twenty-one Bronze Stars were presented to others who fought.
Gabriel Cruz, like Santana, suffers from PTSD. Both men will have
to face their demons as they work to solve their new case.
