If there’s one thing I’ve learned from years of writing the Santana mysteries, it’s that suspense is best enjoyed with company—especially when that company loves a good twist as much as you do. I've had the pleasure of attending numerous book clubs over the years, both large and small. Some have gathered in libraries, bookstores, and community centers, while others
have met in living rooms with a handful of devoted readers. No matter the size of the group, I've always enjoyed the thoughtful discussions, insightful questions, and the opportunity to hear different perspectives on my books. Meeting readers face-to-face and talking about the characters, mysteries, and writing process has been one of the most rewarding aspects of being an author. This month, I want to share some ideas and insights on how to host a successful mystery book club, whether you’re
gathering in a cozy living room, an auditorium, or online.
The Art of the Mystery Book Club
At the heart of every great book club is conversation. Mysteries, with their layered plots and unexpected turns, naturally spark lively debate. Here are a few tips to make your next meeting as suspenseful—and enjoyable—as the stories themselves:
Choose Your Mystery: Select a novel that offers strong characters, atmospheric settings, and plenty of clues to dissect. The John Santana series, starting with White Tombs, is a perfect place to begin if your group enjoys crime fiction with
real-world stakes.
Set the Scene: Create an immersive atmosphere. Dim the lights, play some moody music, and serve snacks inspired by the book’s setting—Colombian coffee or Aguardiente, perhaps, or treats from St. Paul.
Encourage Theories: Before discussing the ending, invite everyone to share their suspects and theories. You’ll be surprised how different perspectives can
lead to new insights—or red herrings!
Dive Deeper: Use discussion questions that explore not just the “whodunit,” but also the motives, moral dilemmas, and cultural contexts at play.
Connect with the Author: Many authors, myself included, enjoy hearing from book clubs. If your group chooses a Santana mystery, let me know what questions or theories come up—I’m always
happy to answer them either in person or through Zoom!
